MGNT 350 Organizational Structures and Performance  (3 hours credit) – This course examines the nature of individual and group employee behavior in a work environment and how it affects organizational performance. Its purpose is to provide an understanding of how organizations can be managed more effectively and at the same time enhance the quality of employees work life. Topics include work motivation, rewarding behavior, personality traits, stress, individual and group effectiveness and conflict, power and organizational politics, leadership, job design, organizational structure, decision-making, communication and organizational change and development. The course makes extensive use of individual and group experiential exercises and case analysis.

Learner Outcomes

This course aims to improve students understanding of human behavior in organization and the ability to lead people to achieve more effectively toward increased organizational performance. After completing this course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of how to carry out the organizing function of management.
  • Formulate ways to carry out the controlling function in organizations.
  • Identify ways to fulfill the leadership function of management.
  • Explain how linking the organizational social practices to the community is ultimately advantageous.
  • Understand individual behavior in organizations, including diversity, attitudes, job satisfaction, emotions, moods, personality, values, perception, decision making, and motivational theories.
  • Understand group behavior in organizations, including communication, leadership, power and politics, conflict, and negotiations.
  • Understand the organizational system, including organizational structures, culture, human resources, and change.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental theories of organizational behavior and the implications of these theories to your real-life experiences (work, life, and service to others);
  • Demonstrate an understanding of organizational behavior terminology (i.e., critical concepts/terms/theories, including diversity, motivation, decision making, power, and teams);
  • Observe, develop, and practice interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and written communication skills related to organizational life; and
  • Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through the awareness and analysis of recent organizational issues/problems.
