Minor Programs

Matriculating students are invited to enhance their academic studies with an “Academic Minor." At Leighton University, a minor is defined as a cluster of thematically related courses derived from one or more departments. This group of courses must be combined with a major/degree program at the bachelor's level. However, a minor is considered to be an optional supplement to a student's major program of study.

Students must make an application for an academic minor through the department offering the minor in conjunction with the Office of the Registrar. Specific course work that deviates from published selections must be determined in consultation with an Academic Advisor and/or the Program Coordinator in the department that is offering the identified minor. A statement of successful completion of the academic minor will appear on the student's transcript at the time of graduation.

Eligibility for a Minor

Minors must be completed simultaneously with a major degree program. A minor may not be completed by itself, independent of a major program. This means you cannot earn a minor after you have already earned your bachelor’s degree(s). You need at least one active major in order to pursue a minor. Multiple minors can be linked to the completion of a single major.

Also be aware that since the minor must be completed with a major, any outstanding minor requirements will prevent the awarding of the degree for your major. If you ultimately decide to graduate without the minor, the minor must be removed from your records before your degree can be processed.

Specific Requirements for Minor

  • Only students in 4-year baccalaureate programs can apply for a minor.
  • A major must be declared before pursuing a minor
  • A minor should consist of at least 18 credits.
  • At a minimum of 12 credits hours must be in courses at the 200 level or higher.
  • At a minimum of 9 credit hours in the minor areas must be in courses at the 300 level or higher
  • At least 6 credits must be at Leighton University.
  • Students are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in their minor.

Other specific requirements for each minor are determined by the discipline granting the minor.

Students may not declare a minor in the same discipline as their major (e.g., one cannot combine Business Administration Marketing minor with Business Administration in Management major and vice-versa). Academic minors may not apply to all programs o or disciplines; for example, Leighton University does not have a minor in Liberal Studies.

In special, yet rare cases, students may be permitted to double-count courses.
