Chancellor Shares Leighton’s Vision

Leighton University Chancellor James P. Takona is leading a vigorous process of his vision to establish an institution of distinction with a unique identity of service and excellence in the online educational environment.

He began his appointment as the founding University’s Chancellor in January 2019 to spearhead the “Vision 2020-2030 Plan: Renaissance in Educational Quality and Service through Online Delivery”, the strategic plan approved by the Board of Trustees in November 2019. The published decade-long strategic plan articulates Leighton’s mission, vision, and set of institutional core values and sets out goals to be met to establish Leighton University as it makes its entry into the online educational environment. The purpose of this document is to chart the course for the next decade and beyond.”

During the November 10, 2019 Board meeting, Chancellor Takona made a strong statement to the Trustees, saying: “This document is fundamentally built upon our Mission Statement, articulating the specific ways in which we can fully realize our mission within the next decade. We will intentionally and systematically embark on Leighton’s bold Vision 2020-2030 Plan to cultivate the newly developed programs with a clear goal for excellence anchored upon principles of superior pioneering instruction and research within the online environment.”

The University Chancellor will provide leadership to a team of academics charged with developing undergraduate programs that will champion quality and access to higher education for both traditional and mature students. Additionally, he has made it a top priority to shape Leighton to provide personalized and high-quality service. “Our aspirations are great, and our confidence is high.” Dr. Takona said.

In response to the uniqueness of the  University’s Vision 2020-2030 Plan, the Chancellor was emphatic in his statement declaring it as “representing a product of unprecedented scope and details that provides all our other stakeholders with an assurance of strategic and financial plans are both sound and workable.” The Chancellor thanked the Board for its overwhelming vote on the Vision 2020-2030 Plan.“I’ve become much more convinced that our plan is not only the best; but is one that is workable and contains the mechanism to carry our University decisively, securely, and permanently to stand among the ranks of institutions of higher learning whose services are offered within the online environment” the Chancellor added. Further, “I am aware of the tremendous responsibility and the extraordinary privilege to be a part of founding Leighton University . . . I am invigorated by the discussions I have had with many of you. I am both challenged by the task ahead of us and encouraged by the commitment you all bring to carry Leighton University into the wide future before us,” he continued.
