Position Summary

Leighton University’s Department of Paralegal Studies invites applicants for two (2) full-time non-tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to start August 2021. The department is seeking candidates with significant accomplishments in research, teaching, and service. The Assistant Professor of Paralegal Studies is a member of the ranked faculty with an intermediate academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in teaching, research, and professional service appropriate to the discipline. An Assistant Professor at Leighton University supports the University’s mission of providing student-centered, quality education. They are committed to the success of our students. This includes teaching effectiveness, research, scholarly/creative activities, student advisement, university service, professional and community service, student advising and involvement, and professional effectiveness. During the 9-month contract of employment, faculty members are expected to assist and work with students and respond to departmental, School, and institutional needs. During the academic year, the approved teaching load is 12 undergraduate semester.

Position Duties

Teaching and Student Engagement

  • Teach assigned courses following the course syllabi and a schedule of classes that may include online and those that may be offered in any approved instructional site.
  • Assist the development of new and creative instructional materials, including new courses and programs of studies.
  • Assist in keeping the curriculum of the program(s) current.
  • Advise students and ensure the successful completion of their degree program.
  • Post and hold office hours in a physical and electronic format (to include virtual office hours) as appropriate.

Research and Research

  • Maintain current knowledge of advances and innovations in the academic discipline.
  • Participate in academic organizations related to teaching assignment.
  • Produce scholarly materials such as original or applied research, manuscripts, articles, book reviews, musical arrangements, or works of art
  • Engage in academic and scholarly activity related to the discipline, e.g., refereed conference presentation of scholarship and papers, serving on a panel discussion, the publication of articles and books, art exhibits, grant writing.

Professional Service

  • Rendered outside the academic discipline in ways other than teaching that contribute to the work of the College vary from individual to individual.
  • Provide service on a consistent and ongoing basis by contributing professionally to department and institutional, professional community, in a participatory, developmental, or advisory capacity
  • Assist with tasks and committee work related to the Department/School/University.
  • Assist with accreditation and program approval processes.
  • Engage in the shared governance of the University.
  • Render service to the broader University community, including advising and working with students.
  • Render service to the faculty member’s academic discipline.
  • Assist with student organizations.
  • Attend Department, School, and University-wide meetings along with in-service workshops, graduation, and other University ceremonies..

Qualifications and Desirable Characteristics

  • A JD or a PhD in Paralegal Studies or closely related discipline is required. ABD candidates realistically scheduled to complete the dissertation by the time of appointment will be considered.
  • ABD applicants should include a detailed update on their dissertation progress
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with others or backgrounds is required.

Reporting

Individual faculty members are responsible to and report to their Department Chair, School Dean, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the University President in ascending order.
